Menopause

What is menopause?

Menopause is a natural biological process that all women experience as they age. It refers to the point when a woman stops having her menstrual period, marking the end of her reproductive years.

The years leading up to menopause are called perimenopause. During perimenopause, estrogen levels become more irregular, causing changes in menstruation and other symptoms like hot flashes, trouble sleeping, and mood changes. This transitional stage can begin 8-10 years before menopause.

On average, most women reach menopause around age 51, but it can happen anytime between ages 45-55. Menopause is diagnosed after a woman has gone 12 months without a period. The years after menopause are known as postmenopause.
