What is chronic fatigue?
Chronic fatigue is a complex medical condition characterized by extreme and persistent tiredness, fatigue, or exhaustion that is not improved by rest and is not directly caused by other medical conditions. Some key things to know about chronic fatigue:
- It is a debilitating disorder that can severely impact one's quality of life and ability to perform daily activities. Symptoms tend to fluctuate but last for over 6 months.
- The exact causes are unknown but may involve immune system abnormalities, mitochondrial dysfunction, brain abnormalities, etc. Risk factors include prior viral infections, stress, etc.
- There are two main types:
- Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) - more serious disease with post-exertional malaise as a core symptom.
- Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) - similar but less severe symptoms.
- Diagnosis involves ruling out other disorders with similar symptoms through medical history, exams, and tests. There are no specific diagnostic lab tests.
- Treatment focuses on symptom management through pacing activities, diet, sleep hygiene, stress reduction, gentle exercise etc. We offer holistic hormone balancing programs that can help restore energy.
