Bioidentical Hormone Replacement

Confused? You Are Not Alone.

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement, Is it Safe and Will it Help?

Midlife is often accompanied by physically and emotionally draining  symptoms such as easy and rapid weight gain, hot flashes, low libido, and depression. If you are like me, you are interested in finding the root cause of these symptoms instead of just addressing the symptoms with little blue pills and anti depressants. For me, the solution started with getting the right information.

The Los Angeles Times  recently published a newspaper article by Thomas H. Maugh II  quoting information based on old research.  Again, the media is alarming women about hormone replacement and cancer. Maugh states “that a study said hormone therapy nearly doubles the risk of death from lung cancer”.

It seems to me that the continued reference to the WHI study which was based on synthetic hormones,  which are actually drugs based on horse estrogens

(Premarin, Provera and the combo Prempro) which  are NOT bio-identical estradiol or the real hormone, progesterone. It is this miss-association it seems to me,  to be one of the biggest causes of confusion, not just among women but even more concerning, among doctors.

The WHI study did not include naturally occurring bio-identical estradiol or the real hormone, progesterone.  Bioidentical hormones are chemically identical to human hormones and  have been available for some time but because they are naturally occurring (like water) they cannot be patented (unless you add something to them or manipulate them) therefor there is no profit motive for research by big pharmaceutical companies.

The sad truth about these scare tactics is that for many women they will not get any help at all because they won’t read beyond the headlines. I believe the best thing we can do for our selves when it comes to menopause and healthy aging is to read, to get educated and to get a good doctor. Not just any doctor but one  that specializes in BHRT and ask a lot of questions based on your health history. That is what I have done and why I have put together a list of recommended reading.

I found another important resource in  Dr. Holly Lucille’s NaturaPause audio series and book for those of you who decide to try a nutritional approach first.

Hormone replacement is not for everybody, lab test, your health history and unique symptoms will help a skilled physician w downright hellish.
